STAYING HEALTHY

JULY 10TH - 14TH     GUARD & PERCUSSION CAMP     9AM-12PM  1PM-4PM (12-1 LUNCH)

                                    WIND VISUAL CAMP                     9AM-12PM  1PM-4PM  (12-1PM LUNCH)

JULY 17TH - 21ST      BAND CAMP                                   8AM-5PM (BRING YOUR LUNCH)

JULY 24TH - 28TH      BAND CAMP                                   8AM-5PM (BRING YOUR LUNCH)

Attendance during band camp is ESSENTIAL to having a successful season.  EVERY MEMBER IN ATTENDANCE IS CRUCIAL TO LEARNING OUR SHOW.  Therefore, it is imperative that all members take care of their bodies.  This means:

*HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!!!  Dehydration is a result of the body not being hydrated PRIOR to physical activity.  A good rule of thumb is to drink your body weight (in ounces) in water each day.  This will increase during camp due to the physical activity.  A great indicator for good hydration is through urine color.  If your urine is yellow, you are dehydrated.  If it is clear to very pale yellow, you are hydrated.  Dehydration causes fatigue, brain fog, nausea, dizziness and other debilitating symptoms.  All of this is 100% preventable if you are proactive in hydrating your body!

*REST AND SLEEEEEPPPPPP!!!!  You need to get a MINIMUM of 8 hours of sleep a night during camp.  Your body and your brain need to rest.   You are asking your body to do a lot the 8 hours we are together and you need to be at your very best.  After camp, go home, eat a good dinner, watch a little tv and go to bed.  Being asleep by 8pm is not unusual during band camp (directors included!).

*EAT!!!!  You will be burning lots of calories ( 3000+ a day).  You need to eat healthy meals that are putting plenty of calories in your body.  YOU MUST EAT BREAKFAST!!!  If you neglect breakfast, YOU WILL GET SICK!  I always recommend students bring snacks to eat on breaks (fruit, string cheese, etc).  Avoid sugary snacks / drinks, greasy food and dairy heavy meals.

*SUNSCREEN - Sunburn hurts and is debilitating.  Apply and reapply when we are outside.  Don't forget your ears and your lips!!  Wear a hat to help shade your face too.

*CHAFFING - Many of our repetitive motions may cause chaffing especially on the inner thighs.  Applying powder or even a thin layer of vasaline to this area can prevent chaffing.  If you do experience chaffing, a bath in cool water and then applying powder usually relieves symptoms.

*MUSCLE SORENESS - Most student get sore the first few days of camp.  A bath with epsom salt and taking advil / ibuprofen can help with muscle soreness.  If you experience cramps, eat bananas or other pottasium rich food.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance to each day of Pre Camp and Band Camp is MANDATORY.  If there is some type of emergency that MIGHT prevent you from attending, please contact Ms. Burnell-Wise IMMEDIATELY at 502-718-4622.  Missing a day of camp could put your spot in the show in jeopardy.  Please be responsible and communicate with your director.

In the event that an absence is unavoidable (extreme illness that you need to go to the dr., death in the family, etc.), THE STUDENT (not the parent, unless the student is absolutely to ill to talk on the phone), must contact the Director, Ms. Burnell at 502-718-4622, AT LEAST 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO REHEARSAL BEGINNING.  THE STUDENT also must contact their SECTION LEADER about the absence.  This should be done AFTER you have contacted Ms. Burnell.  Please understand that telling another student or other staff member to tell Ms. Burnell you will be absent is absolutely NOT ACCEPTABLE.

CAMP INFO

1. Band Camp is the hardest part of marching band.  It is physical, intense and mentally draining.  YOU WILL at some point have a "breakdown".  THIS IS OK!!!  We all do it!  It is VERY demanding.  Just keep working!

2. We must be the MODEL ambassadors for our school!  We spend three weeks on campus during the time while teachers are getting ready for the school year, principals are preparing for the school year and custodians are preparing the building for the year!   Because of this, it is ESSENTIAL that we treat our facility with respect and make sure that the grounds are maintained.  It is also vital that all students stay in DESIGNATED AREAS!  Students are expected to only be in areas they are assigned with and adult supervising.  NO EXCEPTIONS!

3. All students are expected to act as  responsible young men and women!  This means:

*NO PDA *NO CUSSING *FOCUSED DURING REHEARSAL

*BEING RESPECTFUL *TAKING CARE OF FACILITY *FOLLOWING EXPECTATIONS
